MALACCA: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu should not use the issue of the five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders detained under Internal Security Act as a publicity stunt for his own political interest.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said that Samy Vellus call for the release of the five detainees was inappropriate as they had been detained in the interest of national security.

Dont use the issue for publicity simply because of wanting to get support during the coming MIC general assembly.

Prevention is better than cure and in this instance the Government acted in the best interest to safeguard national security, he told reporters after opening the Malacca Biodiversity Expedition in Ayer Keroh yesterday.

Mohd Ali said Samy Vellu should stand by the decision of the authorities rather than make calls for the release of the five men.

He added that the preventive laws under the ISA had been invoked against the five to prevent the likelihood of further street demonstrations, which could have threatened the peace and security of the country.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said the release of the five would be based on the legal process alone and not on demands or suggestions by parties or individuals.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has urged the Government to release the five and claimed it was not a publicity stunt.

That is his right as the leader of the Indian community to fight for the cause but my decision will be according to the law, he said during his first visit as the new Home Minister to the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman.

Syed Hamid said if he was in Samy Vellus shoes, he might have done the same thing.

I might have brought up the issue myself if I was in his position. However, I have my own job and responsibility to perform and so does he, he said.

On Sunday, Samy Vellu said that two of the Hindraf leaders R. Kenghadaran, 40, who was very ill, and M. Manoharan, 46, who won the Kota Alam Shah state seat in Selangor on a DAP ticket should be freed sooner.

He added that another two, V. Ganabatirau, 34, and K. Vasantha Kumar, 34, had not been that involved in the Hindraf rally in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 25. The other detainee is P. Uthayakumar.

Samy Vellu added that both Kenghadaran and Manoharans wives had approached the MIC for help to get their husbands released.

The twist to the story is here: http://thestar.com.my/news/story.as...4808&sec=nation

M. Manoharan's wife denied seeing Samy. According to Pushpa, if she had needed any help, she'd have gone to Karpal instead. OTOH, R. Kenghadaran's wife admits to meeting Samy and asking for help right in the early days .. of which I think many of us remember SV's subsequent references to Hindraf in the days until March 8.
