Got this in mail

Friday, 21 March 2008

Immediate and unconditional release the five Hindraf leaders from ISAdetention as proof that Abdullah has "heard the voices" of Malaysians tostart the process of "national healing" after the political tsunami ofthe March 8 general election Two days after the political tsunami of theMarch 8 general election, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah AhmadBadawi in an op-ed article in Asian Wall Street Journal (March 11,2008), entitled "Malaysia will heal her divisions", pledged:"As there has been much speculation about the implications of ourelection results, I wish to offer clarity on three critically importantpoints: "First, we have heard the voice of our citizens, and I will dedicatemyself, in this second term, to healing the divisions which becameevident during the campaign. That will mean developing new and concreteinitiatives, not just rhetoric, that bring our people together andensure that no one is left behind as Malaysia prospers, whether they areethnic Malays, Chinese or Indians."Abdullah is right. The Prime Minister's fatal mistake in his firstadministration was that his many sweet-sounding pledges which createdthe feel-good euphoria resulting in his unprecedented landslide victoryof over 91 per cent parliamentary seats in the 2004 general electionwere pure rhetoric but not backed up with any significant or meaningfulaction. Is it going to be rhetoric and more rhetoric in his second premiershipor is Abdullah going to start implementing his many pledges of reform ofthe past four years? One immediate test faced by Abdullah as to whether he is starting togenuinely listen to the people to start the process of "nationalhealing" after the political tsunami of the March 8 general election isthe continued unjust, arbitrary and undemocratic detention of the DAPSelangor State Assemblyman for Kota Alam Shah M. Manoharan and the otherfour Hindraf leaders P. Uthayakumar, V. Ganabatirau, R. Kenghadharan andT. Vasantha Kumar under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for spearheadinga national campaign against the marginalization of the Malaysian Indianscausing them to become a new underclass in Malaysia. Is Abdullah prepared to order the immediate and unconditional release onthe Hindraf Five from Kamunting Detention Centre and involve them in theprocess of "national healing" to end the marginalization of allMalaysian ethnic groups - whether Indians, Malays, Chinese, Kadazans,Ibans or Orang Asli?If Abdullah had "heard the voices of our citizens", he would have knownthat one important reason for the political tsunami of March 8 andBarisan Nasional's electoral debacle which saw its vote among theMalaysian Indians slumped by some 35 per cent from 82 per cent to 47 percent, and the MIC virtually wiped out in Parliament and the stateassemblies, is the long-standing political, economic, educational, social, cultural and religious marginalization of the Malaysian Indianswhich has given birth to the Hindraf and "Makkal Sakti" phenomena. Why hasn't Abdullah taken instant action in the past 13 days toimmediately and unconditionally release the Hindraf Five from ISAdetention to demonstrate that the Prime Minister has truly started tohear the "voices of our citizens"?If Abdullah has not yet "heard the voices of the citizens" in thepolitical tsunami of the March 8 general election, then all the otherCabinet Ministers, regardless of race, religion or political party, should demonstrate at the first Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that theyhave "heard the voices of the citizens" and adopt a Cabinet resolutionto urge Abdullah to hear the voices of Malaysians in the politicaltsunami of March 8 to immediately and unconditionally release theHindraf Five under ISA to start the process of "national healing" afterthe 12th general election.I will write an urgent letter to Abdullah before the first Cabinetmeeting next Wednesday to urge on the Prime Minister to waste notanother day for the immediate and unconditional release of the HindrafFive from ISA detention.Lim Kit Siang

PUTRAJAYA: The detention of the five Hindraf leaders under the Internal Security Act will be reviewed as there is provision for it, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar.
He, however, said he did not know yet when the review period would be for the five who are under a two-year detention at the Kamunting detention camp.
He also said that he was not involved in the review.
"Since I am not involved in the review, I will leave it to those responsible to make proposals (on their detention period) and only then can we take the necessary action," he told reporters Friday at his office here.
Better known as the Hindraf 5, the men under detention for their role in the Nov 25 protests in Kuala Lumpur last year, are P. Uthayakumar, V. Ganabatirau, K. Vasantha Kumar, R. Kengadharan, and M. Manoharan who won the Kota Alam Shah state seat by a 7,184-vote majority over incumbent Ching Su Chen of Barisan Nasional.
When asked on calls for Manoharan's release to allow him to take care of his constituency, Syed Hamid said any action taken would be based on precedent, adding that the law was applicable even on those who are under detention.
"We cannot simply react to political parties' call, we have to react towards what is public safety and peace and will make due considerations if there is no threat to national security," he said, adding that if they found no changes to the situation, it would not be considered.
Syed Hamid added that Manoharan could not attend state assembly sessions as an elected representative while under detention.
But he said Manoharan could take an oath as a state assemblyman at the detention camp as this had been done in the past.
Chian Heng Kai and Chan Kok Kit, who won the Batu Gajah and Sungai Besi parliamentary seats respectively on a DAP ticket, did so in the presence of the speaker of the Dewan Rakyat Tan Sri Dr Syed Nasir Ismail, the secretary of the Dewan Rakyat and camp authorities in 1978.
