Thalapathy

Thalapathy was the magnum opus of Mani Ratnam with Rajinikanth. The film also brought a new screen persona to the Malayalam superstar, Mamooty.

Everything about the film was gigantic. From the star cast to the technicians to the production values, the film had richness written all over it. Mani Ratnam took the Nayakan tale a little further and Dalapathi was the thinly veiled modern version of Mahabaratha. An unwed mother abandons her new born child and settles down to marriage with another. Yet her guilt lingers on and her understanding husband helps her in locating the illegitimate child. Meanwhile, the first-born, Surya(Rajini) grows into a small-time ruffian.

He protects an invincible don, Mamooty from a murder attempt. The don takes him under his wings and nurtures him. Destiny brings Surya and his brother, Arjun(Arvind Swamy) face to face as the latter is posted as the Collector of the town. Skirmishes abound and in the climax, Mamooty is shot down while protecting Surya. Suryas mother stays back with him while the Collector is transferred.

It is a familiar story but quite novel to the traditional mindset of the Tamil audience. The approach towards an illegitimate child, especially the understanding husband played superbly by Jaishankar and the longing mother by Srividya was nicely crafted. The circumstances which make the protagonists to come together were very credible and their reactions were realistic. Arvind Swamy stole many female hearts as the dedicated Collector. Rajinikanth was at his mellowed best, letting his body language and dialogues do most of the work. No one had witnessed this aspect of Rajinis ability before. Mamooty as the don who would stand by his friend through thick and thin and who pays with his life was an excellent performance.

Kaakha Kaakha

f it was a frothy love triangle in his debut 'Minnale', director Gautham Menon this time ventures into the world of the cops and the underworld. And what makes the film watchable and different from the routine cop-and-gangster ones, is its sleek presentation and a racy screenplay that rarely has lagging moments.

The director has chosen his cast well and extracted fine performances from them. Enhancing the mood is the sound track, some slick editing by Antony, the framing of the shots and the extreme mobility of the camera (R. D. Rajasekhar). Gautham's dialogues are crisp and kept to the minimum.

For Surya, it's definitely a milestone in his career. The actor puts in a lot of punch in his performance, his steely eyes, and a brisk no-nonsense demeanour, bringing to life the character of Anbuselvan, the Assistant Commissioner of police, stern, gutsy, fearless, who doesn't mind bending the rules to rid the city of the gangster menace.

Anbuselvan's target is Sethu, the long-haired, dhoti-clad kingpin of the anti-social elements. And while Anbuselvan grapples with Sethu and his gang, there enters a new entrant into the play. Pandia, younger brother of Sethu, brutal and wily, a dreaded name in the Mumbai underworld. As the cop and his dedicated crew carry on their relentless hunt, Pandia follows his own favourite game of extortion, kidnapping and murder, creating havoc in the professional and personal life of Anbuselvan. Both the opening and the closing scenes of the film, have been well thought out.

The tempo does have its lagging moments towards the second half, where at times the character of Pandia turns a little ambiguous. And while one wonders at the necessity for the Ramya Krishnan dance number (she is no doubt at her sizzling best), the director adds a clever touch at the end of the number, making it seem integral to the scene!

It is a good career move by Vicky (aka Jeeva, hero of 'University') to shift to a negative role. For the director has given him enough mileage and projected him well on the screen, the actor giving a creditable performance. Daniel Balaji as the cop Srikant, and Devadarshini as his wife are natural and exude spontaneity in their performance.

A delight to watch is Jyotika, radiating the screen with her charm, reflecting a sobriety and maturity in her performance. And if the romantic interludes between Anbuselvan and Maya are so tender, poignant and lyrical, it's no less due to the fine tuning the two lead actors share on the screen.

'7G Rainbow Colony': different and delectable

The breathtaking trailers of Tamil film "7G Rainbow Colony" had been a fixture on TV channels for quite some time now. The music of the movie has also been one of the biggest hits of the season.

Walking into the theatre to watch the movie at last, flooded by memories of Selvaraghavan's last creation, I wondered whether "7G Rainbow Colony" could ever measure up to "Kaadhal Kondein".

What strikes one first about "7G Rainbow Colony" is that its hero, Kathir (played by Ravi Krishna), is no archetypal Tamil film hero. He is an average, rather uncouth and rowdy, lower middleclass Chennaiite. The kind of person, who never draws a second glance from women.

He is the quintessential underachiever who frustrates his father by performing disastrously in every examination he takes. He spends his time drinking, smoking or behaving raucously in theatres with his friends.

Anitha (Sonia Agarwal), whose family has suffered a serious financial reverse, shifts into Rainbow Colony -- a decidedly lower middleclass neighbourhood -- and occupies the flat below Kathir's. Mercifully for the viewer, the result is not love at first sight!

And love, when it does bloom in Kathir's heart, is not the formulaic love that one usually witnesses on the silver screen. In fact, Kathir's long, silent stares and his dogged pursuit of Anitha accurately mirrors the almost obsessive infatuations often seen in school and college campuses in these parts.

Though Anitha's feelings towards Kathir do ultimately change, it is thankfully gradual and believable. The feeling of repulsion that viewers feel towards Kathir also gradually changes as the movie gets on. Anitha then helps Kathir rise out of the ocean of mediocrity and achieve something tangible in life.

Sonia Agarwal is undoubtedly the star of the film. She looks ravishing though a little on the buxom side. She has portrayed to perfection the harassed, young girl with a staid middle class values.

Unprepossessing and ordinary, Ravi Krishna's character doesn't stand out in a crowd and is just one among faceless millions.

Though Kathir's three other friends appear in a large number of frames in the movie, their faces don't stay in the viewer's mind - an indication that Selvaraghavan has successfully managed to portray them as the kind of people who, in real life, receive no second glance.

The songs drag on a little too long but the music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is excellent. The background music, though a trifle loud at times, lends itself to the narrative, which in turn is fast-paced and engrossing.

Selvaraghavan's directorial venture after "Kaadhal Kondein" can be given an emphatic thumbs-up. He has managed to weave together a touching movie, which brings tears to one's eyes at moments. This movie is definitely among the best released this year, and must not by any means be given the go-by.

Kal Ho Na Ho

Kal Ho Naa Ho Tagline:

Aaj, Aaj ek hasee aur baant lo...
(Let's share a smile again today)
Aaj, ek dua aur maang lo....
(Today, Let's ask for one more blessing)
Aaj, ek aanso aur pi lo...
(Today shed one more tear)
Aaj, ek zindagi aur ji lo...
(Today live another life)
Aaj, ek sapna aur dekh lo...
(Today, live another dream)
AAJ.....kya pata, Kal Ho naa ho....
(Today, Who know's 'Tomorrow We Will Be or We won't be)

What would you do if your road in life is heading for a dead-end? What would you do if you had to fight a fatal illness when you havent yet reached a peak moment in your life? What would you do if the love of your life is being snatched from your hands while youre drowning in the agony of your terminal ailment?

Would you turn to your family for love and support? Would you change your perspective on life? Or would you just take a step back and leave the world of sorrow and spend your last moments alone in solace. These are some of the difficult decisions that Aman Mathur (Shahrukh Khan) has to make throughout Kal Ho Naa Ho.

Kal Ho Naa Ho takes place in Manhattan, New York, and is the story of three friends, Aman, Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), and Naina (Preity Zinta), who travel on a journey that teaches them the true meaning of friendship. It teaches them to discover themselves, and to find the courage to live through times of happiness and times of sorrow.

With the constant arguments and bickering in her semi-Punjabi/semi-Christian family, Naina, 23, is completely distraught by the conditions which surround her. In addition to this, she is bombarded with the responsibilities of taking care of her younger brother and sister, as well as helping her mother, Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan) handle the familys economical complications. Between all these burdens Naina never has time for herself. Then comes Aman. He moves into Nainas small Indian neighborhood, and with him he brings his joyfulness and charming personality. He helps solve everyones problems and helps them face the obstacles and challenges that life usually has in store.

Much to Nainas dismay, Aman demands on intervening in her life also. He makes her do things that she would never have dreamt of doing. His constant nagging eventually teaches Naina how to smile once again. In doing so, Aman joins with his friend Rohit in trying to help Naina find her happiness that has been lost in the wraths of time.

In Kal Ho Naa Ho the power of friendship starts to weave its magic over these three friends. But to their unpleasant surprise, a fatal turn of events cause chaos between all three of them. What are these fatal events that cause a ruckus of emotions? What will happen to Naina, Aman, and Rohit? Find out on November 28, 2003 when Karan Johar/Nikhil Advani release this mega-blockbuster venture that is sure to have you on a roller-coaster of emotions.

Story wise, it seems that Kal Ho Naa Ho has shades of Hrikesh Mukherjees classical film, Anand. However, Karan Johar speaks the contrary. He says that Kal Ho Naa Ho is about love and revolves around four people. It isnt a love triangle, but an urban film about friends, mother-son relationship, and about three people whose lives are intertwined by he powerful force of love and friendship.

If Kal Ho Naa Ho asks Who knows what tomorrow holds, what can we ask for? Life is a precious gift of god. Always make the most of it. Whatever long-term goals you have, start pursuing them today. What do we have to lose? Try to see the beauty of the world around you everytime you step outside. Try to smell the sweet fragrance that the moving wind brings. Try to hear the soft sounds that mother nature bears. For this is life, the ultimate love. Make the most out of your life. LoveLaughLiveWho knows what tomorrow has in store?
